How I Built My Own Cloud Storage at Home with Ubuntu Server and Nextcloud

Ever thought of having a personal cloud that can all of your personal data

YES this is for real I have nearly 500gb of cloud storage that i own , (and its free)

How, you want to know

This was one of my recent projects, and one that i was planning for a long time

Some time ago I went on a trip that's when I realized that I didn't took my external storage to store my photos and videos from the trip, do i started looking for different ways to store vast amount of data

The first thing that I thought was about google drive , they provide 15GB but that was no where near my needs

Since then it has been my dream to have a cloud storage for my self, I looked online and found about self hosted servers, since I had a PC just lying around I started experimenting with it, YouTube was my main source of knowledge, i found this youtuber named NETVN82 ,he had some amazing videos of doing this.

According to that tutorials was my journey and here it goes

As you can see I have went into the guts of this 10yr old PC a couple of times for fun so I wasn't much worried about it, so I started

Well obviously not like in the photo I reassembled the entire thing to tip top condition (like a normal laptop)

(just so you, this was is a very old laptop, the keyboard doesn't work, the track pad was mostly dead except for the center portion, occasionally it would crash at boot due to overheating, display half damaged, and at normal use close to no battery life)

Yes it was rough to use this thing.

So at first I formatted its hard drive and installed Ubuntu server

Just look at this, this PC wants to die

NO not yet, I emotionally supported it and gave it a new life, since Linux is way lighter than windows its able to handle it very well.

And the major advantage of using a laptop instead of a desktop is =

Guys this is India and I live in a village the electricity is very unreliable, it just goes at the very moment i start working, so this was the only hope some thing with a inbuilt battery, if this was running windows it would die in about an hour, but now i get around 2 to 2 1/2 hours of battery life(if it is idling, which it is most of the time)

Afterwards I ssh into the server, with this i can operate my server headless from any where

Now I installed ZeroTier , this is what that actually makes it possible for me to access the server from any where in the world

With their help, i Created a private network in which all my devices are connected, any device that is connected to this network behaves like its in a local network, and with a IPv4 address that is given by ZeroTier I can connect my devices with this from any where in the world.

I also installed my cloud software which is Nextcloud

This is a opensource software. With the help of this I can share files , sync folders from my windows system and a lot more.

So here you can both of the programs in action.

Using Nextcloud I have backed up one of my entire drive

And you can see that when i am connected to my Home network i get around 80mbps UPLOAD speed

If I am outside I will get a maximum of 40mbps (that is my WiFi plan speed)

not bad for a self hosted service

Advantages

  • Full control of our data

  • way less cheaper than google drive

  • customizable and expandable to our needs

  • you can have multiple user and share the storage

  • it automatically sync the folder(only in pc)

  • no PC wasted, made trash into treasure

Disadvantages

  • not as reliable as google drive

  • cannot access it from other devices

  • you carry the risk of data loss(highly unlikely)

  • this damn thing is loud, I can hear it from down stairs

  • i wasn't able to play songs using the inbuilt player (most concerning of all)

So lets conclude

This was just a fun project , which I might take a bit seriously and make a permanent project.

This was done to learn more about computers and server and how to make useful & helpful projects

And this is the final product(mostly permanent)

I hope any one who read this blog had a fun time knowing about cloud server and a little bit about me

Thank you, and please visit again for more fun projects like this.

I am inspired by your reading dedication.
